Last year I had a solo exhibtion on Londons Southbank, in a haunted historic building, which was the site of the last bear baiting pit in London. Anyway, I just found this slideshow on flickr.... see it [ HERE ]
is a recently published book. written by Ian Lynam, Parallel Strokes is an enquiery into the history, context, and development of lettering today, both culturally approved and illicit.
Some great interviews and insight, especially with Barry McGee, Tauba Auerbach and Chaz Bojorquez who works I really appreciate.
not sure if its available in England yet, but its Amazon for sure.
It was an excellent night down at Tate Briatain on Friday. Starting with BBQ on the Lawn in the sunshine and finishing with a great set by City Reverb and a whole bunch of stuff inbetween.
I had a projection in the main room which was 150 images on a loop, which ran all night and looked grear with the big stone wall of the gallery bleeding through.
Then at 9.30 Chris Coco;s band City Reverb did a fantastic live set. I hid myself behind the band and made live drawing with a tablet which were projected behind them.
Otwo shot the whole thing on video, so look out for that in my FILM section soon.
Thanks to everyone who made it down to support me and see the works. You know who you are....
I have been invited to make art at Tate Britain this Friday....
Join myself and Chris Coco at Tate Britain this friday August 1 for an evening of live music and art installation in the Duveens. Music performed by CITY REVERB plus laid back folk from KAPARTE, poetry and film from COCO ROSIE plus art interventions from MA CHELSEA Curating Course. Summer Barbeque on the lawn, Bars in the gallery and its Free entry.
Graffiti , for me anyway, has always been about the application of letterforms.
A writers personality came through with his treatment and stylisation of the roman alphabet coupled with the subtle nuances and imperfection resulting in using aerosol paint. A paint not originally formulated for this function. Graffiti ( a term coined by The New York Times to decribe writing on subway cars ) was invented by kids and the very nature of working under an alias to keep ones real identity secret immediately democratised all forms of authorship, meaning all graffiti writers were created equal. Until there output prooved otherwise.
As a teenager in London in 1985, I felt a million miles New York, but through books and films I was able to connect to this world and gain some kind of understanding that I could channel into my own work.
The movie WILDSTYLE was one such inspiration, but actually one of my favourite parts was the animated title sequence drawn out in felt pens by ZEPHYR. The words WildSTyle start off very simple then animate out into wilder and wilder configurations until they eventually explode. This cell is from about half way through and for want of a better expression, blew my mind.
That same year, a trip to Paris, and the discovery of this piece by BANDO, painted on hoardings surrounding the Louvre. Bando had simplified the his Graffiti style down even further, firstly by reducung the palatte to a simple silver and black and secondly by giving the letters room to exist individually without fully overlapping or being connected into each other (an advantage allowed by the fact that the letters were floating on the wall rather than being constrained to the cut off panel of a subway panel)
Without doubt this piece influenced my approach to creating graffiti and even today, over 20 years later, I cannot put pen to paper without it behaving as a subconcious bench mark.
Heres a picture of a piece I made in my bedroom around this time. Its painted in Buntlack, says JAMES and yes, I used masking to get the straight edge effects.
Simpler times, but more important than I could have ever imagined.
I am in a group show opening next week. This is the piece about half way made.
The show which includes Antony Burrel, Ben Drury, Swifty, Mode2, Kate Harrison, Kid Acne and at least 93 other artists and designers is the result of a PR company attempting to align an alcohol brand they represent with , well, art and design i guess.
Lets see how that works out. Details, dates and full artists info HERE.
You shouldn't have trouble finding this at Glasto, Bestival Etc. I am going to be testing mine at The Greenman. In collaboration with Addict and british manufacturer Vango. Limited to only 200 worldwide.
More info, spec, photos and available online Here.

This young dude dropped by the Addict store in London yesterday, and was very excited to show off his latest ink. Personally I am pretty flattered that he used one of my camo patterns as the inspiration for the work and even had my boxtag™ logo added at the top. Luckily the store manager had his camera at hand.
I recently designed a tag logo for a friend which he applied to his leg, and I have one of my own designs on my arm , if anyone knows of any more examples please dont hesitate to get on touch or send through a photo.
I was in Milan recently at an event called SIGNJAM to make a talk about my works to fashion and design students along with photogropher Fatsarazzi and writer Steven Vogel. One of the students took the opertunity to get her hat parsonalised.
Check out Stevens blog over at BLACKLODGES for a bit more info on the event.
This time it was in the current issue of Japan Culture magazine WARP as part of a six page look at the Addict brand and its artist contributors. My japanese isn't great, but i managed to pick out the words alcahol and spraypaint....
Art and music have always sat happily together through sleeves and covers and it's great to see bands who commit to artists and designers to creat visuals that they feel represent their sound.
As a fan of Queens of The StoneAge, it was a pleasure to discover the works of NewYork design outfit MorningBreathInc.
Inspiration, I believe, is a personal and unique experience for all of us. Although I do not get inspired directly by objects or art itself I do know that if I put myself into situations I enjoy or are going to get me excited then in turn that energy should feed back into my work. The Executioners Car Club Spring Riot is just such an occasion. It is held at The AceCafe in London and is a chance for HotRod and 50's enthusiasts to get together, talk cars, tats and cloth caps while having a drink and listen to rockabilly. It is always an essential date in the diary, and a chance to mill about and soak up a genuine private culture just getting on with itself. My interest in the cars came from being taken drag racing regularly as a kid in the 70's and early 80's and I am still fasinated by the detail and personal expression put into customising cars. The names of the car clubs like Suicide Shifters, Cleavers, Them, Throttlers also adds to the mistery and outlawry of the whole culture. The internal reaction to the throaty rattle of a V8 mixed with the smell of a burning tyres is not possible to convey in words, but it makes me smile.
I have posted some pictures of car details here or if you prefer people watching go here. cheers S1
At the same time I wrote about the paintings yesterday, Jeff Hamada posted up a film he made of me making them at the store. I am still not that comfortable about being interviewed on video, but Jeff did a great job on this and its worth a view just for the soundtrack. Have a look here. And be sure to visit Jeff's blog too.
SUBDIVISION is a great niche Vancouver store. On my last visit to Canada owner Antony asked me to make a couple of paintings for the interior to compliment his core brands like BountyHunter, FibreOps, Devilock and Addict which sit with his very focused ownbrand DVSN products. Clothing is displayed on wooden pallets againsts raw concrete walls and black ceilings and minimal lighting. We have just finished working on a couple of very limited collab pocket teeshirts and an M65 jacket which will only be available in the store. (check back for release date, should be end of this month) and make sure to stop by if your in the city. [S1]
For my first post I would like to introduce a great project I have been working on for a while.
The first physical evidence of which has just been released as this 7inch for my good friend Chris Coco and his new band project CityReverb. Chris has generously put me in charge of providing the visual ying to his audio yang so to speak. This is now available at RoughTrade and Phonica. I am currently putting the finishing touches to the CDLP titled 'LOSTCITYFOLK' along with a couple of DJ friendly 12's and some merhcandising for the summer festival gigs . Also we are very excited about a collaborative live performance of the band with me making a big live painting while they play as part of LateTate at Tate Britain this August (more on that nearer the time). If you want to find out more about the Lost City Folk read the journal here.
